The Queen’s Hotel is considered today as a historic building
to be conserved and held for all time as a part of the history of Sri Lanka’s
Central Province.
The Queen’s was originally a Governors Mansion with a small structure
of buildings constructed to house troops. This was later to become the main
complex of the Ceylon Riffle Regiment.
Today the Queen's Hotel which is one of Kandy’s prime
properties set on an extent of 217.5 perches of land is one of the finest and
grandest architectural buildings of its kind in Kandy, along with its 54
spacious rooms, and emphasis on its superb outlets the Queen's Hotel boasts of
the King Narendrasinghe Hall (Mini Ball Room), the Queen of Hearts restaurant, the Lord Mountbatten Lounge Bar, Royal Ball Room
and The Pub Royal, the latter being the only British Pub in the city that
offers service with true colonial flavour.
What’s significant about Queen's Hotel is, its location both
in the city and in Splendid surroundings alongside the Kandy Lake, and the
world renowned“Temple of the Tooth Relic of the Buddha”. Every country has its
pageants and festivals and so does Kandy which has the world famous “Kandy
Esala Perahera Pageant” which is held annually. This pageant proceeds along
side the Queen's Hotel's East & West wings, providing the most magnificent
viewing facilities for the guests who are patronizing the hotel.
From its inception as the Queen’s in 1895, the hotel has
been a magnet to visitors. Henry Cave, in his book “Picturesque Ceylon – Kandy
& Peradeniya”. (Published in London in 1894) ”Not a week passes without
scores of fresh visitors from every part of the world visiting this historical
town. They come here to the home of the latter Singhalese kings, the famous strong
hold that was the last part of Ceylon to have fallen into the
hands of the British. The lovely setting of the city; the
most beautiful walks in the tropics, and the magnificent botanical gardens of
Peradeniya”
Temple of Tooth Relic
The tooth relic was brought to Sri Lanka in 371 A.D. from
India. In India there was a king called Buhasiva. He has instructed his son in
law Dhantha supposing if he lost in the battle to take the tooth relic to Sri
Lanka where his friend was living. He handed over this tooth relic to his son in
law Dhantha. The king lost the battle and his daughter princes Hemamali and son
in law Dhantha brought the tooth relic to Sri Lanka, and it was hidden in her
knot of hair for safety. When they reached Sri Lanka King Buhasiva’s friendly
king Mahasen had died. So they handed the sacred tooth relic to king Megavan
who was ruling in Anuradhapura.
The sacred tooth relic was then handed over to the buddhist
monk’s of Abayagiriya for safe keeping and also as an object of worship for
Buddha.. Traditionally thereafter the sacred tooth relic was regarded as a
royal treasure and symbol of kingship and was enshrined in the private shrine
room of the temple in the royal palace complex of the Capital and protected
by the king himself. When the capital was shifted from
Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa the tooth relic was taken to Polonnaruwa by king
Vijayabahu 1 and he constructed “Atadage”and enshrined it. Aftertsome time
Queen Sugala has taken the tooth to Amsterdam bay. There was a fortress and it
was hidden there. After a long battle king Parakramabahu the 1st brought the
tooth relic again to Polonnaruwa. And king Nissankamalla constructed the tooth
relic temple called "Hatadage" and enshrined it. After that it was
brought to Dambadeniya,Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, from Kurunegala they brought to
Kotte. During the period of King Mayadunna it was taken to Seethawaka.During
the period of Rajasinghe 1, portugues power spread in the costal area and it
was taken to Delgamuwa Viharaya, which is situated at Kuruwita in the
Rathnapura district, and it was taken to Kandy in 1593 and kept by king
Wimaladharmasuriya. In 1753 the Kandy Perahera started to honour the tooth
relic, and it was taken around the Kandy town.
